Hockey Party in Paradise: Hockey Hot Spots

If there’s a downside to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, it’s that they occur during the year’s first sunny days.  For many of us northerners the months of May and June mark the first chance to do some fishing, get out for a bike ride, or even do some yard work.

If you want to be hardcore (like some hockey fans I know), you can move the TV out to the deck so you can soak up the sun’s first real rays while still catching the afternoon game.

However, there is a better way to take your playoff hockey party outdoors….

YoYo MO’S
Bucerías, Mexico

The old Mexican fishing village of Bucerias is probably the last place you would expect to find a great hockey bar.   Bucerias is located just north of Puerto Vallarta on Mexico’s Pacific Coast.

Canadian Glenn Newell and his wife Tanya opened YoYo Mo’s in 2007.  It remains the only Canadian/American sports bar in the area.

Hockey is a key feature at YoYo Mo’s.  The decor in the bar/restaurant is overwhelming with sticks, jerseys, hockey pictures and helmets.

YoYo Mo’s carries all the NHL action, on multiple TVs.  They also show the World Championships, World Junior tournament, and…well any type of hockey broadcast they can pick up!

YoYo Mo’s ownership and staff even take their love of hockey to the streets, sponsoring (and playing in) ball hockey games every Tuesday and Thursday year round.  Tourists are invited to join in!

If you’re traveling from Western Canada Glenn recommends looking into West Jet for direct flights to Puerto Vallarta. Royal Decameron runs several small hotels and vacation rentals in the town of Bucerias.

However you choose to get there, YoYo Mo’s is a prime destination for hockey playoff viewing in paradise.  We applaud Glenn and Tanya for their dedication to vacationing hockey fans and deem YoYo Mo’s a certified Hockey Hot Spot.

LOS TABERNACOS
Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Hockey PArty in Paradise - Los Tabernacos

If you’re a Habs fan, Los Tabernacos is a bucket list destination.  While relaxing in beautiful Playa Del Carmen, owner Daniel Gingras discovered two major problems; There was nowhere to watch his beloved Canadiens and there was nowhere to get a decent plate of poutine.

Daniel took it upon himself to solve both these problems when he opened Los Tabernacos in 2011.

When asked how they celebrate hockey at Los Tabernacos Daniel replied:

“We’re giving out a lot of free shots. Especially, if my team wins, we give a free shot of tequila for everybody.”

Although every hockey night at Los Tabernacos is a party, Habs games are such celebrated events that they require reservations.

Los Tabernacos also does between period giveaways and free shots of tequila with your meal.

You had me at burritos and poutine, but let’s review the whole offering.

Beautiful beach town…Check…Great French Canadian food…Check…Crazy tequila hockey parties…Check!!!

Playa Del Carmen is located just 45 minutes south of Cancun.  Daniel recommends ADO buses over taxis for the drive south.

Los Tabernacos is absolutely a certified PHB Hockey Hot Spot!

Don’t bring a knife to a fist fight. Bring bbq hockey stick gear and some foil – you’re gonna want seconds.

Good call. Keep your stick on the ice, unless you’re using it to cook burgers.

I dive in cozumel and have been to plays del Carmen several times. Try their xtabentun, this bar carries it, it’ll be well worth your while. My favorite place to watch is at my house with the doors open. I live in northeast Tennessee now, hockey is in its infancy. I have to drive 2 hourse to get on ice in Knoxville twice a week. Well worth it I’ll add. I have my doors open because I want my neighborhood to hear the madness and wonder what the hell I could possibly be doing. They all know by now. Anyways, id love to have that grill set, there’s a few neighbors who have started to watch, they had to find out if the hype was real, which it is of course.
